Part Four

We start this part with a batch of three boilers that were authorised for building in 1943, I am not certain when exactly they were built, nor am I clear as to why and for what purpose they were built. It is possible that Thompson had these boilers built to enable him to try to find the most suitable boiler for his "new" Pacific Engines. In the event only one boiler was used by Thompson, in the rebuilding of No. 4470 GREAT NORTHERN, the others eventually finding their way onto A4's.

British Railways ordered the next batch of 10 spare boilers, in 1948, they were probably built in 1950, and the earliest use I can trace is July 1951.These Boilers received British Railways Serial Numbers so did not need renumbering.
